Drone stockpile volume measurement
Understand the boundary, base surface and validation choices behind drone-based stockpile quantities before comparing inventory reports.
The base surface changes the answer.
A stockpile volume is calculated against a chosen base. A flat assumed base, a surveyed floor and an earlier terrain surface can produce different results. Agree the base method and document why it is suitable for the site.
Define what belongs to the stockpile.
Mark the boundary consistently and inspect areas hidden by machinery, conveyors or adjacent material. Remove temporary obstructions only using a documented method. Poor visibility cannot be repaired by silently inventing a surface.
Keep repeated surveys comparable.
Use a consistent coordinate reference, control method and naming convention. Record the capture date and material movements during the capture window. When comparing inventory dates, explain any change to the boundary or base assumptions.
Do not convert volume to mass without evidence.
A volume calculation does not establish material density or moisture. Converting to tonnes needs a justified density value and the relevant material information. Report geometric and material assumptions separately so an inventory decision is auditable.
